OPALCO Committee Progress

The DIA OPALCO Committee held a Community Forum on May 31. The meeting focused on discussing Opalco's proposed solar farm expansion on Decatur Island.  The DIA Opalco Committee presented its assessment and concerns about the farm's technical feasibility, impacts on environmental and community impacts. The committee found that Opalco had not adequately addressed these three areas of concern.

The community members who attended discussed the need for comprehensive information from Opalco.  In addition, they decided to bring together residents of other islands to review and propose a broader, comprehensive energy plan for the entire county.
They also discussed broader energy initiatives, including rooftop solar and the Switch It Up program, while stressing the importance of community engagement and strategic planning for future energy projects.

More details of the meeting can be found HERE.

DIA Summer Solstice Island Picnic

Come and celebrate Solstice with your island neighbors!

DIA will be providing brats and beans for all. Please bring a side dish to share with your neighbors. We will have music, yard games, a treasure hunt for the kids (7:30 pm), and a chance to decorate a DECATUR PRIDE banner!

Please BYOB responsibly!

More detail can be found HERE.

Decatur 4th of July

This year's 4th of July feels like it's going to be a good one! In addition to the annual events, DIA will be holding an Ice Cream Social following the Dog Costume Contest at the school. We'll be scooping bowls of ice cream and supplying a variety of toppings. A schedule of all of the July 4th festivities can be found HERE.

If you would like to celebrate 10 years of the 4th of July on Decatur, Sarah Jones has created a commemorative t-shirt that can be purchased HERE.

Community Bulletin Board

A location has been donated for the new DIA Community Bulletin Board. This bulletin board will serve all islanders who wish to share information, as well as a mechanism for DIA to engage everyone. The location will be on the same corner as the Art Pole. Time and materials for the bulletin board are also being donated by your island neighbors.

DIA Summer Events

DIA has many events planned for the summer! On June 15 there will be a workshop to discuss Forest Management for Property Owners. This will be led by Greg Krisinger who recently participated in WSUs Forest Stewardship Planning program. One of the first steps in preventing fires is to ensure a healthy forest.

Keep track of island events on the DIA website's Calendar page.

Island Survey

One of the objectives of DIA is to do the work that matters to the people of Decatur Island. To that end, we will be sending out a survey this summer to help identify the priorities of our neighbors. During the May meeting, people identified a list of issues that we will be asking people to give us their top issues. From that feedback, DIA will create ad-hoc committees to research and execute solutions. If you would like to be involved in the creation and collation of the survey, please email info@decaturislandalliance.org.

Volunteers Needed

DIA is looking for volunteers to help out at the Saturday Market. There are many neighbors who are not familiar with the work of DIA and we are wanting to provide a means to help people  get to know what we are all about. If you are able to sign up for a Saturday, please email info@decaturislandalliance.org.

Next Meeting and Agenda

The next DIA meeting will be held Sunday, June 15, from 10:00 am to noon at the school. We will hear from our Committee Chairs and community liaisons and open the meeting up for dialog and socializing.
